Accident kills 3-year-old girl

Authorities are trying to figure out why a metal security grate detached and fell from the facade of an Italian ice shop in Philadelphia, killing a 3-year-old girl.

The girl was at the Rita’s Water Ice store in north Philadelphia where a fundraiser for a sorority and fraternity was underway. Fraternity members lifted the grate off the girl.

Group will seek changes again

A group hoping to change the way Illinois draws its political boundaries is acknowledging flaws in its failed campaign while pledging to make another attempt in the next several years.

Deborah Harrington is head of Yes for Independent Maps. She says the group will put lessons learned in the campaign to good use. Cook County Circuit Court Judge Mary Mikva ruled Friday that the redistricting measure and another calling for term limits didn’t meet constitutional requirements for getting on the November ballot.

Streator man gets “selfie” with Fallon

A Streator man working in Boston saw an opportunity for a selfie with a highly recognized talk show host Saturday. 23-year-old Richard Chalkey was at Logan International Airport in Boston meeting people when he thought he recognized “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon walking through the concourse. He was right.

Chalkey told Classic Hits 103.9 WLPO news, Fallon wasn’t getting much attention till someone yelled out his name. Chalkey approached the personable Fallon and asked him to join in a “selfie”. Fallon agreed.

Chalkey is the son of Gary and Chris Chalkey of Streator. Richard Chalkey is employed by an internet security firm

Last day of festival in Oglesby

A bags tournament and water fight are just a couple of things planned for the final day of Oglesby Summer Fun Fest.  The tournament starts at 10 am and the water fight at 12pm.

The food stands,  carnival and beer garden open at 1pm.  Sunday also brings a reptile show pony rides and The Big Fun Band,  a Blues Brothers tribute.  Fireworks end the night.

The festival is at the Oglesby Swimming Pool.
