Plenty of water is in our future

Posted by wlpo on February 16, 2014

The Illinois Valley will be dealing with lots of water this week.

The National Weather Service has put our three counties under a Winter Weather Advisory starting Monday morning. Snow – perhaps up to seven inches – could fall Monday across LaSalle County and two to five in Bureau and Putnam. Winds will pick up from the South during this time.

After this storm event, indications are for warm enough temperatures to create melting and some flood issues in low lying areas. Many rivers have frozen surfaces that could break up into pieces causing ice jams and possible flooding.

Bee winner again from Wallace Grade

Posted by wlpo on February 16, 2014

Spelling “Babushka” Saturday meant a lot for a Wallace Grade School eighth grader. Drew Klatt spelled it and won the 2014 LaSalle County Spelling Bee held in Ottawa High School. For the second year in a row, Wallace Grade Schools students have won the bee. Ram Koganti of Wallace won last year and advanded to nationals. Klatt wins a plaque and monetary gifts from the Book Mouse and the William Ieuter trust. His parents are Mary Affrunti and Chad Klatt. Second place went to Peru Catholic eighth grader Jacob Jagiella who also received gifts from the Book Mouse and the Ieuter Trust. Klatt now has a date to spell again in the WEEK TV Studios on March 21. Babushka – by the way – is a scarf worn by elderly Russian women.
