Ottawa residents share ideas for former factory

Posted by wlpo on February 4, 2014

Could a former glass marble factory be replaced with houses? Neighbors of the closed Peltier Glass plant in Ottawa gathered Monday night for a community visioning and planning session.

The city asked a group from Kansas State University to help them get grant money if they chose to do something with the property. The site is owned by a man in California who once offered to sell it to the city.  City officials declined the offer because the land is a Brownfield site with possible contamination.

City Engineer Dave Noble explained how the factory is zoned residential. He says a large portion of the building is newer construction with a cement floor, heating and insulation.

People at last night’s meeting formed groups and came up with five ideas for the property. The most popular use was single family housing. Green space, a museum, and storage were other suggestions. Several people said they would like to see a grassy field.

A follow up meeting to Furth go into the possibilities will be February 25 at 6:30pm.
