earth swallows man

The effort to find the body of a Florida man who was swallowed by sinkhole under his home has been called off. Officials say rescuers ended the effort to find Jeff Bush’s body because it’s just too dangerous. Crews have begun demolishing the house this morning.

Metheny and the joys of “catching”

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny was set to return to the dugout for yesterday’s game against Washington, one day after dealing with food poisoning and a herniated disk. He missed a trip to play the Houston Astros in Kissimmee, Florida on Friday. The 42-year-old says he believes the herniated disk is “all part of the joys of catching.”

missing child alert

 A statewide missing and endangered persons alert has been issued for a 1-year-old boy who authorities say was taken by his father from a hospital in northeastern Illinois. Police say the Department of Children and Family Services took the infant to the hospital in Kankakee on Wednesday after bruises were found on his body. After he was abducted from the hospital, the agency obtained a juvenile warrant allowing it to take immediate custody of the 1-year-old and his two older brothers if they are found.

waiting on wrong way driver’s ID

It’s not known who was driving a wrong way vehicle on I-80 Saturday near Seneca that struck and killed a Bridgeview man. The Grundy County Coroner’s office says 66-year old Abed Bader was eastbound after Midnight Saturday when an unidentified wrong way driver hit him head on. Bader’s vehicle came to a stop, was hit by a semi and shoved two hundred feet before coming to rest in the median. Bader was pronounced dead at the scene. Bader’s car was so badly crushed, Grundy Coroner John Callahan said it took an hour to remove him. Bader was returning from a stop in Spring Valley.
