Vandalism reported in Streator

Nothing says Merry Christmas like a broken windshield. Police in Streator are looking for the person responsible for a broken car window Wednesday in the 1000 block of Park Street.

They may be the person that slashed all of the tires on a van in the 300 block of Third Avenue.

Nobody has been arrested.

Teenager ticketed after an accident near Streator

What is a teenager doing out at 5:30am on a Sunday? La Salle County Sheriff’s Deputies were wondering. A teen from Streator was arrested after sheriff’s deputies say he ran into a yard along Route 18 west of Streator Sunday morning.

Police believe the boy was trying to turn from East 13th Road onto Route 18 but didn’t see the stop sign and jumped the curb. After that, police say the boy panicked and drove away.

The boy was ticketed for leaving the scene, having an invalid license because of the time of day, failing to report the crash and failure to yield.

Crash snarls traffic on Route 23 north of Streator

Two people were hurt after crashing on Route 23 between Grand Ridge and Streator.

La Salle County deputies say Margaret Morrison of Streator was northbound on Route 23 Tuesday afternoon when Benjamin Gagliardo of Streator pulled in front of her at an intersection. Gagliardo says he didn’t see Morrison.

Both were taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Streator with minor injuries. Nobody was given a ticket.

Infamous drug dealer gets arrested in Streator after an alleged fight

One of the leaders of the infamous “Da Hittaz” drug gang in La Salle County is in trouble again.

On Wednesday morning Streator Police got a call about a fight. They arrested Clarence Merritte of Chicago for battery and criminal damage to property.

Merritte was paroled from prison in February after serving over five years for the class X felony of criminal drug conspiracy. He was among a group called “Da Hittaz” that were arrested and sentenced in 2008 for running a drug ring between Chicago and the Illinois Valley.

The leader of the group is Clarence Merritte’s brother Calvin. He’s expected to be let out of prison in 2018.

Tickets on sale for “A Christmas Carol”

The classic story, “A Christmas Carol” has been remade and transformed into versions featuring The Muppets, Mickey Mouse, and more. You can enjoy another take on the traditional story at Engle Lane Theater in Streator.

A cast will perform the story reader’s theater style during which they read from scripts. Steve Myers will read the role of Ebenezer Scrooge while Mary Morgan will narrate.

Performances are Saturday, December 13 at 2pm and 7pm. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children ages 10-12. It’s not recommended for children younger than 10.

La Salle County inmate dies after being found hanging in his cell

A man  in the La Salle County Jail for drugs was found hanging in his cell.

38-year-old Jason Watson of Streator tried hanging himself with a bed sheet November 16 according to La Salle County Sheriff Tom Templeton. Watson was found alive and was rushed to St. Elizabeth Medical Center before being flown to Peoria. He was pronounced dead at St. Francis Medical Center three days later.

Templeton says an investigation was done and all the proper procedures were followed by jail staff.

Watson was arrested November 5 for allegedly dealing heroin while living at the Streator Housing Authority complex.

Streator Police investigate burglaries

Televisions, a porcelain doll, and a lockbox are a few of the things reported stolen out of homes in Streator. At least three people went to the police Monday after items were stolen from their homes.

As it would be, three people were arrested for residential burglary Monday afternoon. They were Jennifer Johns of Niles, Nicholas Miller of Chicago, and Christina Costello of Chicago. Police haven’t said yet if they are thought to be responsible for the burglaries.

Water disruptions possible in Streator

A major water main replacement is underway on the south end of Streator.
Crews are replacing over a 1,600 feet of water main on Bloomington, Jefferson and Church Streets. The work may temporarily impact water service if you live on these streets in south Streator.
Illinois American Water is paying $330,000 to replace a water main that’s been around since 1940. They hope the new main will cut back on water main breaks.
Installation of the new main should be done by the end of the year.

Plenty of chances to take in Veteran’s Day ceremonies

You can remember and thank a United States Veteran for their service at a Veteran’s Day service.  Ceremonies are being held throughout the Illinois Valley.

In Peru, the traditional service will by the Peru Veterans Memorial Group will be at 11am Tuesday inside of Washington School.  Normally the ceremony is held outside but it is being held inside this year due to the weather.

Ottawa and Streator’s Veteran’s Day ceremonies starts at 10:45am Tuesday. Veterans in Ottawa will gather at Washington Square and in Streator at City Park.  Mendota will also have a Veteran’s Day ceremony at 11am Tuesday in Veteran’s Park.

Military veterans will join students and teachers Tuesday during LP High School’s second annual Veteran’s Day program.

The program begins at 10am in Sellett Gymnasium. If you are a veteran and would like to attend, call the high school principal’s office to have a seat saved.

Services for Streator teen will happen inside a high school gym

In the coming months, Pops Dale Gymnasium in Streator will be noisy with high school hoops. Saturday it’ll be the site of a visitation and funeral service.

17-year-old Benjamin Newton of Streator will be remembered during a visitation that starts at 10am and a funeral service at 2pm inside the high school gym. Newton was killed Wednesday night after the car he was riding in crashed north of Streator.

Two other teens in the car are being treated in Peoria with one listed Thursday in serious condition and the other in critical condition.
