Annual IVCC Edible Car Contest returns Wednesday

One of the most popular and tasty traditions is back for a tenth time at Illinois Valley Community College.  Student teams will battle it out Wednesday during the annual Edible Car Contest. Teams build cars made entirely from food. Past cars have included bodies made out of cucumbers and hot dogs and wheels made of cookies.

Teams are judged on things like speed, design and creativity. High school and college teams are welcome to compete. Last year Hall High School was the big winner among 26 teams.

For more information call Dorene Verucchi at IVCC. All cars have to be checked in by 11am Wednesday.

Science and engineering bring out the competitve side of area high school students

High school competitions aren’t limited to sports. Students from area high schools put their science and engineering knowledge to the test during the Illinois Valley Community College Academic Challenge Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering competition.

It was Friday at the college. Ottawa Township High School, St. Bede Academy and Midland High School each won their respective team divisions.

Students also took home individual awards in categories such as mathematics, engineering graphics, and computer science.

Career building workshops offered at IVCC

You don’t have to become a full-time college student to build career skills. Illinois Valley Community College is offering free career development workshops this semester.

The workshops will be every Wednesday from 12:15-12:45pm in the Community Technology Center in Oglesby. The workshop will also meet once a month at the Ottawa Center campus.

You can even bring your lunch to the workshops. Registration is encouraged, but is not required.

Peru man arrested for allegedly claiming to have a bomb

Claim you have a bomb and it will be taken seriously. A student at Illinois Valley Community College was arrested Thursday morning after allegedly making a statement Wednesday evening that he had a bomb in his book bag.

Oglesby Police Chief Jim Knoblauch says Robert Jasper of Peru was searched by campus security Wednesday evening. No bomb was found. The investigation was given to the Oglesby Police Thursday morning.

Jasper faces a charge of felony disorderly conduct and is being held in the La Salle County Jail.

A funny fairy tale for children planned for the Hegelar Carus Mansion

You probably know somebody that needs to be the center of attention. Perhaps you could take them to a performance coming up at the Hegelar Carus Mansion in La Salle.

“Grunella, The Story Stealer” is a play about a delusional, high-strung, witch in Fairy Tale Land who is so desperate for her own story she casts a spell over all princesses including Snow White and Cinderella.

The play is a production by the Illinois Valley Community College Theater Department. It was written and directed by IVCC’s Dr. David Kuester.

Performances are at seven Friday night and at one, four, and seven Saturday at the mansion. Because seating is limited, you must make a reservation online at the mansion’s website.

Newest Hall of Fame class at IVCC will be enshrined this weekend

A person that may have taught you or sat next to you in class at Illinois Valley Community College might be going down in LPO College and IVCC history.

The LPO-IVCC Hall of Fame is inducting the Class of 2014 Saturday night. Dr. Rose Marie Lynch, a retired instructor, is a member of the Hall of Fame and is involved with the ceremony. She thinks it’s incredible that retired mathematics instructor Lincoln Frost and the late government instructor Joe Mikyska are being recognized for their teaching.

The late newspaper publishers and radio station owners, Peter Miller Jr. and Peter Miller III are also being inducted along with State Representative Frank Mautino, an IVCC graduate, and the 1976 football team.

The ceremony is at six Saturday at LP High School’s Matthiessen Auditorium. It’s open to everyone and there’s no charge for admission.

Herman named IVCC head men’s basketball coach

The new head men’s basketball coach at Illinois Valley Community College knows his way around campus. Former assistant, Chris Herman will take over the helm this season. The college announced the move Thursday.

Herman was an assistant for Tommy Canale for six seasons. Prior to coming to IVCC, he was an assistant at Pratt Community College in Kansas and worked under his father at Illinois Central College. He played basketball at Washington High School and Sam Houston State and Georgia College.

Herman says IVCC will play an attacking style defense and offense.

IVCC Trustees call a special meeting to discuss contract negotiations

Friday evening is an unusual time for a board meeting, but that’s when the Illinois Valley Community College Board of Trustees is getting together to talk about employee contracts.

The closed session will begin at 5pm. The board could talk about the ongoing negotiations with the teacher’s union. Instructors began the semester without a new contract.

The board could also approve a contract with the Service Employees International Union when they come out of closed session.

That contract would cover the custodians but not the instructors.

Instructors picket for new contract at IVCC

Holding signs that said things like “fair contract now”, 51 faculty members at Illinois Valley Community College held an informational picket Monday morning.

Their three-year contract is expired and negotiations are at an impasse according to Ray Roskos with the Illinois Federation of Teachers. He says salary and benefits are the biggest sticking points.

The two sides met Friday and are both asking that a mediator get involved. There won’t be another picket Tuesday.

Upgrades to the Cultural Center has the IVCC theater department on the road

The Cultural Center at Illinois Valley Community College is getting a new sound system that should improve your theater experience.  Don Grant Zellmer of IVCC says that will have them producing four shows this fall semester on the road.

The venue for their children’s production is the Hegeler Carus Mansion.  Zellmer says they’ve produced shows at the mansion before and it is a great experience for the children.  Three other shows, including the tap dancing musical Dames at Sea, will be performed in St. Bede Academy’s small theater.  Zellmer says they have developed a great partnership with St. Bede.

You don’t have to be an IVCC student to audition for a part. Auditions are being held later this month.  Learn more about the upcoming theater season by listening to an interview at the WLPO AM and FM news page.
