AMBUCS chapter providing therapy bikes to local children

Posted by wlpo on August 14, 2014

A bicycle is to a child is what a car is to you- freedom.  Unlike your car, a bicycle provides exercise and that’s crucial for people with physical disabilities.

Two dozen people, mostly children are able to ride customized therapy bikes thanks to the I-80 Chapter of AMBUCS. Rob Swon of Seneca helped establish the local chapter last September after his son received a bike in 2008.

Swon says the bikes are designed by therapists and can cost between $200 to $1,100. He says Masonic Lodges have been large supporters.

The LP High School Future Business Leaders of America recently donated a specialized tricycle to Alex Munson of Magnolia.

Swon says they rely on donations. Find out how you can help by visiting their group on Facebook

Posted by wlpo on August 10, 2014

A truck driver was killed before dawn Sunday when his  truck tractor hit  an eastbound semi on westbound Interstate 80 near Ottawa.

Illinois State Police Master Sergeant Anthony  Kestner says it occured just before 4am,  2 miles west of  Marseilles.  44-year-old Dung Nguyen of Antioch, California, was heading east when he crossed the median into the path of a westbound semi.

The driver of that semi was flown to a Dupage county hospital, where he was  pronounced dead. His name will be released pending notification of relatives.
Dung Nguyen was ticketed for improper lane usage  and going slower than the minimum speed.  Nguyen and his passenger,  55-year-old Andrew Nguyen were taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Westbound I-80 was closed between Marseilles and Route 71 exits for about five hours.
