Truck fire affects I-80 in Bureau County

Long after the fire was out, traffic heading west on Interstate 80 in Bureau County was slow going.

Emergency crews spent hours at the scene of a semi-truck and trailer fire that happened several miles west of the Ladd and Spring Valley exit Friday night.

The truck was hauling kitty litter. Both of its gas tanks exploded.

Ladd, Spring Valley, Seatonville and Princeton Fire Departments responded and along with Illinois State Police Troopers.

Mother and children taken to hospital following Route 71 accident

Many roads remain covered in ice and snow. Slick roads likely contributed to an accident north of Marseilles Tuesday morning.

A La Salle County Sheriff’s Deputy says that Garrett Bennett of Sandwich was turning from Route 71 to East 24th Road when he hit a mini van driven by a woman that is five months pregnant.

Bennett and Jeanne Felesena of Sheridan and her two children were taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center. Nobody appeared to be seriously injured.  Bennett was ticketed for failure to yield.

One person injured during an ATV accident

A snowy field and an ATV might seem like a good time, but it can be dangerous. A person was taken to the hospital after hitting a pole in rural Tonica late Friday afternoon.

It happened near 675th Road. A person was taken to Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru according to the Tonica Fire Department. The Conservation Police were investigating the accident.

Streator High School trying to cope with fatal crash involving students

Counselors are being made available for Streator High School students after a fatal crash that reportedly involved classmates.

Superintendent Matt Seaton says “our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of the students who lost their life or suffered injuries in the accident Wednesday night”. Seaton says they’ve activated their crisis counseling team and met before school to talk with teachers about how to talk about the crash with students. He’s also encouraging parents to talk to their children about how they are dealing with the crash.

All activities at Streator High are canceled Thursday.
