Longtime Ottawa horse breeder creates courtroom spectacle

Posted by wlpo on December 3, 2016

An Ottawa man who has a hard time hearing spoke up in court about his desire for a new lawyer.

Barney Erickson told Judge Cynthia Raccuglia that he didn’t want to be represented by the Public Defender’s Office. The 80-year old would then ask for his court dates to be moved to January because he’s “got a barn he’s working on.”

Comments like these had led Judge Raccuglia to order a mental health evaluation for Erickson, who was found fit to stand trial. Erickson is accused of violating his duties as an animal owner.

It’s not the first time he’s been accused of a crime of that nature. Erickson has been in and out of the legal system for decades. Most notably, he had 21 horses taken from him in 2011 after pleading guilty to violating his duties as an animal owner.

He’s due back in court for a status hearing January 13th. Upon hearing the date, he expressed concern, claiming “that day’s unlucky.”
