Busy work schedule means no Christmas display for Weber family

Posted by wlpo on November 21, 2016

A Christmas light display that draws hundreds if not thousands each year to the east end of La Salle will be dark this year.

Scott Weber says due to time constraints, he and his family will take the year off from doing their Christmas Light show. Weber says his work schedule is too intense this year. He’s hoping to bring the display back next year.

The display across from Senica’s Oak Ridge golf course last year helped raise about $4,000 and 2,000 pounds of food for the Illinois Valley Food Pantry. Weber also didn’t have the display up in 2013 or 2014.

Another successful “Fill the Mayflower” is in the books.

In about six hours time Saturday, over 4,200 pounds of food was collected at the Peru Hy-Vee to help restock the shelves at the Illinois Valley Food Pantry. Nearly $200 in cash was also donated. The food drive happened the same day the pantry in La Salle had its Thanksgiving meal distribution.

Strike details coming soon at O’Hare

Posted by wlpo on November 21, 2016

CHICAGO (AP) – Thanksgiving holiday air travelers will soon learn when hundreds of workers plan to strike this week at O’Hare International Airport.

Service Employees International Union officials will announce the date of their strike during a news conference Monday. About 500 workers committed to a strike after a vote last week.

They work mainly for private contractors at the airport and include baggage handlers, cabin cleaners, janitors, and wheelchair attendants. The workers are seeking union rights and a $15 per hour wage.

The Chicago Department of Aviation has said it doesn’t anticipate any disruption in service.
