Statewide sportsmanship award for L-P

Good sportsmanship is paying off for L-P.

The school’s “Super Fans” received the 2016 Jack Kelly Fair Play Award Special Recognition from the Illinois High School Association. The award is given yearly to an athlete, coach or official for an outstanding act of fair play or sportsmanship.

L-P was nominated by an IHSA official for how they acknowledged the death of two Galesburg High School students before the teams played football last year. The L-P color guard put together a tribute for the victims and the L-P band that night played the Galesburg fight song.

Political mailer near Springfield features a fake nude photo of lawmaker

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – As bad as you may think political mailers have been in the Illinois Valley, they probably can’t top this.

The Illinois State Police are investigating who’s responsible for a mailer showing an altered picture of a state lawmaker that depicts her in the nude. The fake image of Republican state Rep. Avery Bourne was sent to people in central Illinois. Bourne’s Democratic opponent in her re-election bid, Mike Mathis, denounced the mailer and says it “goes beyond a late campaign dirty trick.”

Avery represents a district south of the state Capitol. The 24-year-old lawmaker is the youngest in the Illinois Legislature.

Daylight Saving Time is back

Remember to “fall back” before you go to bed Saturday night.

At 2 Sunday morning, Daylight Saving Time takes effect with turning your clock back an hour. As always it’s a good time to change your smoke alarm batteries.

Last year in the United States, three out of five home fire deaths resulted from fires in properties where there were no working smoke alarms.

Congressman hosting Youth Leadership Summit at IVCC

Congressman Adam Kinzinger will celebrate his re-election by hanging out with kids in Oglesby.

The Republican is hosting his 4th Annual Youth Leadership Summit at Illinois Valley Community College Wednesday from 8:45 until 2:15. Juniors and seniors picked by their teachers in the Illinois Valley interact and talk to Kinzinger, Al Bowman, the president of Illinois State University and Carl Cannon who is the Youth Outreach Supervisor for the Peoria Park District.

The day will include group and leadership exercises.

Sheridan woman hurt after run in with a deer

A Sheridan woman was shaken up after colliding with a deer.

Deputies and paramedics went out to a county intersection Friday evening just east of Sheridan for a crash. Fifty-eight-year-old Patricia Bublitz says a deer ran into the side of her vehicle.

She was taken to Valley West Hospital to be looked at.

Man in Streator unresponsive after ATV crash

ATV’s are fun but they continue to be dangerous.

Grand Ridge firefighters were called just after midnight Saturday morning to an ATV accident on Golf Road in Streator. A 21-year-old man fell off an ATV and hit his head. The dispatcher said he was unresponsive but breathing.
