Man Arrested for Burglary Possibly Connected to Several More Incidents

Posted by wlpo on October 28, 2016

A Streator man who was arrested Friday afternoon is suspected in several break-ins over a number of years in the area.

At a press conference this afternoon, Ottawa Police and States’ Attorney Brian Towne announced that 30-year old Juan Garcia Nunez had been arrested earlier in the day. While he was arrested for 1 count of residential burglary, both police and Towne believe more charges are possible.

Garcia Nunez is accused of breaking into a Streator home in September. According to Towne, actions done by Garcia Nunez involving women’s underwear may tie him to a number of other incidents under investigation.

Police claimed it is possible Garcia Nunez could’ve been involved in more than 20 other incidents in the area. Ottawa Police Captain Dave Gualandri said the department believed Garcia Nunez posed a “significant danger to the public.”

Garcia Nunez is currently at the LaSalle County Jail where he’s being held on $1 million bond. He’s expected to appear in court Monday.

Clyde Tombaugh craft sends back another picture of Pluto

Posted by wlpo on October 28, 2016

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) – A spacecraft carrying remains of Streator’s Clyde Tombaugh has sent back the last bit of data from its 2015 flyby of Pluto.

The picture – one of a sequence of shots of Pluto and its big moon, Charon – arrived earlier this week at Mission Control in Maryland. It took more than five hours for the image to reach Earth from NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft, some 3 billion miles away.

New Horizons swooped past Pluto on July 14, 2015. It’s now headed to another small, icy world in the far reaches of the solar system.

Tombaugh is credited with discovering Pluto.

Posted by wlpo on October 28, 2016

If you’re a fan of fall colors, make it a point to visit Starved Rock State Park this weekend.

According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, this will probably be the last good weekend to see the fall colors at Starved Rock. The west entrance is the best place to catch large yellow leaves. Most oak and sycamore trees at the park are changing from yellow to brown, dropping their leaves.

There will be both guided hikes and fall colors trolley tours this weekend.

State’s attorney’s race in La Salle County includes reports of sign vandalism

Posted by wlpo on October 28, 2016

It wouldn’t be an election season without accusations of people tampering with campaign signs.

Thursday night, La Salle County State’s Attorney Brian Towne said on his Facebook page that he was disappointed to find out this week about a large number of his campaign signs being cut up and destroyed beyond repair from Ottawa to La Salle during the overnight hours. He thanked supporters who called to vent their frustration over the sign vandalism.

Three weeks ago, Towne’s Republican opponent Karen Donnelly posted on her Facebook page that “some criminal element and unscrupulous characters are out removing my signs near Wedron.” Her campaign was looking for a plate number of a white sedan.
