La Salle County again delays any possibility of new sand mine developments

Posted by wlpo on September 13, 2016

Don’t plan on seeing any new high capacity wells or more specifically any new sand mines in LaSalle County, at least not until November.

The LaSalle County Board voted to extend their moratorium on high capacity wells Monday night after some spirited debate. The extension was the fifth extension since the first ordinance was passed in July of 2014.

A US Geological Survey on the impact of new high-capacity wells is being cited as the reason for the extensions. Changes to the survey because of state funding problems led Chairman Jerry Hicks to say he “doesn’t see a definitive answer” to the impact more wells would have.

The moratorium was extended to the county board meeting on November 3rd.
