Lostant Man Ticketed for Starting Monday’s Fatal Chain Reaction Crash on I-80

Posted by wlpo on August 4, 2016

A semi driver from Lostant is being blamed for causing the fiery crash Monday afternoon on Interstate 80 near Ottawa.

Sixty-nine-year-old Donald Breckenridge was ticketed for failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash after his rig smashed into the back of a Chrysler Sebring driven by 26-year-old Darrel Scott Jr. of Indiana. Scott and his fiancé, 25-year-old Abigail Bohstedt were killed. Scott’s car was pushed under a semi and caught fire.

The initial collision set off a chain of events where another semi and two trucks became involved in the wreck. Thirty-four-year-old Octavio Vargas of Warrenville was driving a truck hauling tires. He was killed when his truck caught fire.

The only other driver involved from Illinois was 35-year-old Luke Kozak of Streator. He was driving a large railroad repair truck. Kozak wasn’t hurt.
