Proposed L-P tax referendum amount now sitting at $38 million

Posted by wlpo on July 21, 2016

If you were dead set against a $67 million referendum for renovations and additions to L-P High School, does a $38 million tax increase change your vote?

After looking at mail and phone survey results and getting a recommendation from a citizen’s task force, the L-P School Board is likely to vote next month to put a $38 million referendum on the November ballot.

In the mail survey, nearly 1,600 voters responded and 73 percent said either definitely or probably no to a $67 million bond. With the phone survey, nearly 200 voters responded and almost 60 percent said either definitely, probably or leaning towards no. When they were asked about a lower cost $38 million, it was almost a 50-50 split between yes and no for the tax increase.

The $38 million referendum takes out new construction and would just be repairs and renovations to the existing school. Air conditioning would be part of the renovations.
