Some school leaders take exception to Rauner switcheroo

Posted by wlpo on June 7, 2016

Was a change in venue for Governor Bruce Rauner because of overcrowding or to keep some opposition out?

School superintendents like Hall’s Mike Struna choose not to take in Rauner’s speech about education funding once he decided to move from Ottawa City Hall to the downtown courthouse. Struna says the venue was changed because of organized labor and other community members wanting to be heard.

He defended his decision to not follow the governor by saying “I thought that if I attended the press conference that was closed to other concerned groups, I would be doing a disservice to other groups that are also suffering from poor funding and in some cases no funding but were not allowed to have their voices heard.” L-P Superintendent Steve Wrobleski took the same stance after the location change.

Struna does back the governor’s plan to fund education and asks State Representative Andy Skoog to support it as well.
