Huge mushroom hunt returning in Ottawa

Posted by wlpo on April 26, 2016

From Missouri to Virginia hunters are coming to Ottawa in less than two weeks and they have one thing in their sights: morels.

The city’s 6th annual Midwest Morel Fest will be celebrating that particular mushroom all day on Saturday May 7th. Every year the festival sees an increase in the number of hunters who sign up for the Illinois State Championship Hunt. This year they’ll be after more than $900 in prizes.

Curt Bedei is the Executive Director of the Ottawa Visitors Center, and he says it should be a great day for hunting. Bedei says the area for this year’s hunt is full of hundreds of dead elm, which he says are essential for morels. It’s free to watch and attend, but if you want to hunt it’s $30 for adults and $15 for kids.
