Idea to tax by how much you drive is off the table

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – If you were up in arms about a proposal to pay for road construction by getting taxed by the miles you drive, you can relax now.
Democrat and Senate President John Cullerton floated the idea last week because revenue from taxes on gas is declining. He says he “received a lot of constructive feedback” but will not pursue his plan. The idea was to allow you to choose to have a device monitor mileage or pay 1.5 cents per mile on a base 30,000 miles yearly.
Cullerton posted on social media that he hoped the plan would spark debate about more efficient ways to fund construction.
