Budget crunch impacting live music in Oglesby

Posted by wlpo on April 5, 2016

While municipal band concerts are free for you to enjoy, they are not free to the city’s playing host.

According to the NewsTribune, Band Director Larry Butkus made a plea to the Oglesby City Council Monday night for money to keep the band concerts going. Butkus says when he’s asked when their next performance is, he can’t say.

A show can cost nearly $5,000 and as of now the city council has only set aside $2,000 for the music. Mayor Don Finley was sympathetic to the band but doesn’t seem eager to take money away from somewhere else in the city to support the band concerts.

There used to be upwards of five band concerts a year in Oglesby but last year there were only two.
