Young girl hurt in crash near busy Peru intersection

A teenage girl was hospitalized after a chain reaction crash in Peru.

Elizabeth Cartwright of La Salle was northbound on Route 251 Friday afternoon when she says her brakes failed, causing her to rear end Maria Fuentes of La Salle who was stopping for traffic near the Peru Mall. Fuentes was rear-ended by Cartwright, causing her car to get pushed into an SUV driven by Kiersten Horn also of La Salle.

A 13-year-old girl riding with Cartwright was taken to IVCH in Peru. None of the three drivers went to the hospital.

Cartwright was ticketed for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving uninsured.

Concert headliner announced for 2016 Bureau County Fair

Platinum selling country singer Dustin Lynch will perform live in Princeton this summer.

Lynch will headline the Bureau County Fair with a concert Thursday, August 25th. The 30-year-old from Tennessee has had two songs go platinum and another reach gold status since his country debut in 2012. He’s touring this year with Luke Bryan.

Plane spends night in Peru field after emergency landing

A plane that landed in a muddy field north of Peru arrived at the Illinois Valley Regional Airport via a tow truck.

Peru firefighters and airport workers spent part of their Friday morning getting the single-engine plane out of a muddy field and onto a nearby road where it was then brought to the airport in Peru. The plane which only had minor damage spent Thursday night in the field north of Interstate 80.

Forty-two-year-old Patrick Sullivan of Chicago was attempting to land at the airport in Peru because of engine failure. He didn’t make it and instead landed the plane in a field. Sullivan wasn’t hurt.

Open burning weekends will be taken up Monday by La Salle leaders

If some people get their way, you may want to steer clear of La Salle a couple weekends later this year if you have respiratory problems.

The Public Health Committee of the La Salle City Council is meeting Monday night to possibly recommend designated burn weekends in April and October. Alderman Jerry Bacidore says several of you have approached him about having designated burn weekends. The city doesn’t allow open burning at any time right now.

The burning would be for yard waste, garden refuse and tall grass. The committee meeting starts at 6:45 just before the regular city council meeting at 7.

Head-on crash sends three in Spring Valley to the hospital

No names have been released yet in a head-on crash in Spring Valley.

Three people were taken to St. Margaret’s Hospital after the fender bender Thursday near the intersection of Routes 89 and 29. One passenger had to be physically removed from a car by paramedics.

The crash involved an SUV and a minivan. You’ll hear more details as they become available.

Gas prices around the Illinois Valley hover around two dollars a gallon

What a difference a week can make.

Last Friday, the cheapest gas in the Illinois Valley was on the east side of La Salle County. Now it’s on the west end.

According to GasBuddy.com, gas in Streator is down to $1.78. The cheapest gas meanwhile in La Salle-Peru is $1.93. The Champaign area has the cheapest gas in the state right now at $1.64

The statewide average for unleaded is $2.08, which is about 60 cents cheaper than a year ago.

Prognosis improves for ailing Spring Valley pastor

Some much needed good news for family and friends of a Spring Valley pastor right before Easter.

Sixty-eight-year-old Rev. Robert Spilman is now listed in serious condition while being treated at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. That’s an improvement from being considered in critical condition Thursday.

He was flown to OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria last Thursday night after a two-car crash on Route 6 in Bureau County. Pastors from the Peoria Diocese have filled in for Spilman at Nativity of Our Lord Parish in Spring Valley.

Women’s underwear mystery has La Salle County deputies looking for clues

Not long after dealing with a woman allegedly driving a riding lawn mower drunk and crashing into a car, deputies in La Salle County are dealing with an even stranger case.

The sheriff’s office put out a release yesterday saying they are looking for information regarding suspicious incidents involving women’s underwear being left outside homes in Lake Holiday, Sandwich and Somonauk. No other details have been provided.

If you have any information about the suspicious events surrounding women’s underwear in northern La Salle County, give the sheriff’s office in Ottawa a call.
