Firemen handle 3 fires in 20 hours

Posted by wlpo on January 17, 2016

Streator Fire Department made it official on their Facebook page late Sunday.  The department worked 3 structure fires in a 20 hour period this weekend.

First was a garage fire at 409 West Grant around 5am Saturday.  That took 10 minutes to extinguish.  About 5  1/2 hours after that,  a resident noticed smoke coming from the roof of a vacant home at 411 Ralph Plumb street.  Firemen responded about 10:25am and did find light smoke around the eaves and roof.  Information officer Bryan Park said a small fire was found inside that was extinguished in 5 minutes. Minor physical and smoke damage resulted.

Park said personnel got a third call about 1:22am Sunday at Grant and Wasson.  Firemen arrived in 3 minutes and found the vacant single story home at 814 North Wasson,  heavily involved with fire, according to Park.   Freezing temperatures and strong winds affected their efforts and it took 25 minutes to get the flames under control. There were no injuries, but the structure sustained severe fire and smoke damage.   The last of eleven firemen left the scene at 4:30am.  Reading Fire Department manned Streator’s station during this time.

Streator police and the State fire Marshall are investigating all 3 incidents.
