New IRS phone scam going around

Posted by wlpo on December 2, 2015

If you get a call from the Internal Revenue Service, chances are it’s a scam.

The Streator Police Department is looking into several complaints about an IRS scam. Scammers call claiming they work for the IRS and say that the intended victim owes money to the IRS and if they don’t pay immediately, a warrant will be issued for their arrest. The scammers usually alter the caller ID to make it look official.

Keep in mind the IRS doesn’t call for immediate payment. They also don’t ask for credit card numbers over the phone or threaten to arrest you for not paying.

Over 20 teams of Streator firefighters and Red Cross volunteers fanned out last month across Streator and installed over 200 smoke alarms in homes. The effort was called “Save a Life Day.”

The next “Save a Life Day” in Streator is this Saturday. Volunteers covered 28 blocks of the city last month and hope to do even more this weekend.
