Follow up meeting and open house to talk about contamination clean up in La Salle

Posted by wlpo on December 1, 2015

A zinc plant that’s been closed nearly 40 years in La Salle is still on the minds of many.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is hosting an open house and public meeting Thursday at L-P High School to explain a proposed plan to clean up soil pollution at the Matthiessen & Hegeler Zinc site. The 160-acre property is on the east side of La Salle along the Little Vermilion River with homes around much of the polluted property and the Carus Chemical Company along the south side of the site.

Environmental concerns include a 6-acre slag waste pile with metals like copper, lead, and zinc. Runoff from the pile has washed into the river.

According to the EPA, a final cleanup plan will finish next year. You can see and hear their plans Thursday between 4 until 5:30 and again from 7 until 9.
