Peru Police investigating break-in where guns, ammo were stolen

Peru Police are investigating a residential burglary where two guns and ammo were stolen.

Police responded to a burglary call Friday in the 2400 block of Pearl Street.

Officers were told that sometime during the day, someone broke into the house through a window. Two hand guns – a Hi-Point 9 mm and a Beretta .32 caliber – were stolen, as well as 10 boxes of ammo and few rounds of .32 caliber bullets.

Marseilles man charged with biting officer

A Marseilles man was already in enough trouble, but he piled it on after using his teeth.

Jeffrey Smith was pulled over for a traffic stop shortly before midnight Friday on Route 71 near Interstate 80. He was arrested for driving while license revoked, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and aggravated battery of a peace officer.

Smith was taken to the La Salle County Jail, where he started fighting with deputies and even bit one of them. He was charged with two additional aggravated battery charges after the scuffle.

His bond will be set today.

Two-car crash sends five people to hospital

Make sure you always pay attention when the car in front of you is turning.

A two-car crash east of Ottawa that sent five people to the hospital was caused when a car drove into the back of someone turning.

Around 6:30 Saturday night, Michaela Hart of Marseilles was preparing to turn onto North 2950th Road from East 24th Road when she was hit from behind by Jason Hughes of Marseilles.

Hughes and his two passengers were taken to OSF Saint Elizabeth Medical Center in Ottawa. Hart was taken to Morris Community Hospital while her passenger, Michael Hart of Marseilles, was taken to OSF Saint Elizabeth Medical Center.

Hughes was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
