Naperville recycling program too successful

Posted by wlpo on September 13, 2015

A Naperville electronics recycling program is a victim of its own success.  City officials say they’re suspending the program after Sept. 19 because they can’t afford to dispose of what’s become an “unmanageable stockpile.”

Naperville and DuPage County signed an 18-month contract in January with New Life Electronics Recycling to properly dispose of electronics brought to the drop-off center.  But the company reported that 629,000 pounds of electronics were brought to the facility in the first 4 months of the contract – equal to 60 percent of the volume collected in all of 2014. Much of the stockpile remains at the public works site.

Public Works Director Dick Dublinski calls the situation “extremely unfortunate,” and says the city can’t afford to use tax dollars to recycle the materials.
