Higher numbers expected at “P.A.D.S.”

Posted by wlpo on August 29, 2015

Another ripple effect from the budget impasse. “P.A.D.S.” is opening again Tuesday to the homeless – especially those who can’t get the State to help with their rent, heat or electricity bills. Carol Alcorn is the Executive Director. She told the News Tribune they’re prepping for more guests staying a lot longer. Last year, Alcorn said 160 men, 76 women and 18 children stayed in the Peru and Ottawa shelters. 180 stayed less than a month. The Peru facility lodges 16 men and 8 women.

“P.A.D.S.” needs 280 volunteers a month and some are getting too old to help. And, since the state isn’t paying, “P.A.D.S.” needs more funding to keep it all going. Items needed include peanut butter and jelly, floor cleaners, toilet cleaners, resealable bags, paper towels, trash bags, toilet paper, plastic spoons and laundry soap.

Illinois Valley man told he’ll have to wait to collect big lottery winnings

Posted by wlpo on August 29, 2015

The money situation in Springfield is so bad even lottery winners are being given “I-O-Us” from the state.

Susan Rick of Oglesby says her boyfriend won $250,000 in the lottery but they’ve been told to wait on their payout. With no budget, the state comptroller can’t cut checks for over $25,000. A lottery spokesman says the state lottery is affected by the budget situation like any other state agency.

Rick says she planned home fix-ups and a visit to see her daughter with the big winnings. She says if the situation were reversed, the state would “come take it, and they don’t care whether we have a roof over our head.”
