Conservation officer from the Illinois Valley stumbles upon a crime near Springfield

Posted by wlpo on August 20, 2015

An officer sworn to protect and serve is never truly off duty. Conservation Police Officer Phil Wire covers La Salle County but he inadvertently helped solve a burglary in Springfield.

According to the Conservation Police, Wire was driving on Interstate 55 near Springfield a few weeks back when he saw a man running down a ditch with a flat screen television. He checked out the man’s car and found video games systems and a satellite dish.

Wire asked police in Springfield but didn’t hear anything about burglaries so he let the guy go. Before leaving however, Wire wrote down serial numbers of the electronics.

A couple days later, the serial numbers did come back to stolen electronics from a home in Springfield. The man who Wire saw running along I-55 was then arrested for burglary.
