Peru City Council divided over need for a lobbyist

Posted by wlpo on July 27, 2015

Do you think a city like Peru needs to pay $24,000 a year for a lobbyist? That question split the Peru City Council Monday night.

The council voted 4 to 3 to rehire Tim McAnarney to be their eyes and ears in Springfield. Alderman Tom Payton says McAnarney has gotten the city funding they wouldn’t have otherwise gotten and wants to see him finish other projects still in the works. Mayor Scott Harl says it’s the best thing for Peru and the lobbyist is able to open doors.

Alderman Dave Potthoff though said he’s seen no real results because of the lobbyist while fellow Alderman Tony Ferrari says they should save the money and better use their state lawmakers for leads.

Former council member Rodney Perez spoke during the public comment of the meeting saying McAnarney has spent most of the city’s time at golf outings and political fundraisers.
