2 persons stabbed in Millington Sunday

      A stabbing Sunday morning has disturbed the quiet and easily overlooked village of Millington. LaSalle County Sheriff’s office says they responded to 600 West Sycamore in Millington after a report of a stabbing during a party. A deputy’s report says there were several altercations on the property prior to their being summoned around 2:45am.

    During the fighting, 2 people received stab wounds to the torso. Friends and family took one victim to OSF St. Elizabeth in Ottawa. Later the victim went to OSF St. Francis in Peoria. Friends took a second victim to Valley West Hospital in Sandwich before they were transferred to OSF St. Anthony’s in Rockford. The Sheriff’s office continues to investigate.

    Millington is four miles east of Sheridan in Mission Township.

Clinton responds on email issue

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton said she never knowingly sent or received classified information using her private email server and did not know what messages were being cited by intelligence investigators as examples of emails containing classified information. Clinton spoke briefly Saturday about the email matter after a Democratic gathering in Iowa.

Festival works sweet corn angle

    If you enter this food Contest, 1 rule is simple. All catagories must be made with sweet corn and prepared in advance. The Mendota Sweet Corn Festival Food Contest is 2pm August 8. The grand prize is a $250 Mendota gift certificate. Entry forms are at the Chamber of Commerce office.

    And, the next day, there’s a Sweet corn eating contest…for ages 12 and under. The first 25 registered will participate. And, if you want to take home an edible souvenir, fresh Del Monte Sweet corn will be sold all weekend from RP Lumber, Washington Street and Route 34 and in the Prescott Brothers Parking lot.

Mourners pay respects to Naperville woman

Family and friends of an Illinois woman found dead in a Texas jail are remembering her as a “courageous voice” for social justice. And they’re struggling to understand how a traffic stop for failing to use a turn signal escalated into a physical confrontation that landed Sandra Bland in jail, where authorities say she hanged herself.

Hundreds attended Bland’s funeral Saturday near the Chicago suburb where she grew up.

Mendota woman arrested in connection with car burglaries

A Mendota woman has been arrested in connection with a string of car burglaries in Franklin Grove.

Lee County Sheriff Deputies Thursday arrested Melissa Jordan on a Franklin Grove warrant. Jordan is charged with burglary to a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen debit card, unlawful use of debit card and theft.

The charges stem from a report of several car break-ins in Franklin Grove on July 20th.

Further investigation with more charges and arrests are pending.
