Frank Mautino taking steps become Illinois’ next auditor general

Posted by wlpo on July 16, 2015

State Representative Frank Mautino could have a new job this time next year.

The Democrat wants to become Illinois’ next auditor general. William Holland has the job now but is retiring at the end of the year. The auditor general gets a 10-year term and the pay is $152,000 a year.

Mautino says his experience in leading both the ethics and audit commissions in Springfield makes him qualified for the job. The auditor general is the only statewide office elected by the house and senate and not by voters. The pick needs to get super majority approval by both Democrats and Republicans.

If Mautino became auditor general in January, it would leave Democrats in his 76th State Representative District left to choose someone to fill out the remaining year of his term. He’s been in the House since 1991.

Sinkhole blamed for closing stretch of Route 26 between Princeton and Ohio

Posted by wlpo on July 16, 2015

A sinkhole has been confirmed to be the reason behind the closing of a stretch of Route 26.

More than 10 miles of the highway between Ohio and Princeton was abruptly closed Monday for what the Illinois Department of Transportation initially called a “pavement failure.”

According to IDOT, the sinkhole – located about two-and-half miles north of Interstate 80 ¬– was probably caused by a nearby field tile going bad, combined with recent heavy rains.

IDOT said it’s hard to say how long the closure will last, but it will most likely last 2 to 3 weeks.
