Cost to take countywide transportation could be going up in La Salle County

Posted by wlpo on June 12, 2015

When you’re on a fixed income, every dollar matters.

Rates could be going up for seniors and the disabled who use the countywide transportation system called North Central Area Transit, or NCAT. Right now it costs anyone who is at least 60 years or disabled $1 each way whether it’s a trip in Ottawa or out of town. The proposal is to charge elderly and disabled riders 35 cents a mile per trip with a maximum fee of $5.

NCAT board member Reed Wilson says they’re suggesting the increase fare because of less state and federal funding and that some people are taking advantage of the system. Commissioner Wayne Eichelkraut though thinks the higher rates will hurt many seniors with little money to spend.

Mayor Bob Eschbach suggested they set up a hardship fund where they can subsidize costs for Ottawa NCAT users.
