IVAR hoping to get a little help from their friends

Posted by wlpo on June 8, 2015

Being on call 24/7 can be taxing. Especially if you’ve been on call for 16 years.

That’s why Chris Ellberg of Illinois Valley Animal Rescue is asking for La Salle’s help. Ellberg says she and her sister, Sue Jacobson, are constantly on call for when the city of La Salle picks up stray dogs that need to be transported to IVAR. Monday night, she asked the council to hold the dogs for up to 24 hours. The dogs would be held wherever there’s room, like a city garage. That way, Ellberg or someone on staff can pick up the dogs when they’re able too.

Ellberg says she knows it’s her choice, but constantly having to drop everything to collect dogs for 16 years has taken its toll, especially when her and her sister plan to eventually transfer ownership of IVAR in the near future. IVAR already has an agreement in place with the city of Peru, and it has worked well according to Ellberg.

La Salle Police Chief Rob Uranich said the idea would need further discussion, since there isn’t much extra room at the city, plus La Salle has more stray dogs than Peru does. The council agreed to talk about the idea more at a later meeting.

Mother Nature’s Fireworks Don’t Stop Oglesby

Posted by wlpo on June 8, 2015

Thunder, lightning and heavy rain didn’t stop fireworks from exploding over Oglesby.  Early in the evening Mayor Don FInley said they were past the point of calling off the fireworks, so those who waited it out were rewarded.  Last night’s rain did put an early stop to the carnival and live music.

Beautiful weather and big crowds helps push the 50-50 jackpot well over $20,000.  Shirley Bacidore of Oglesby is the big winner, taking home more than $10,000.

Power’s Back On

Posted by wlpo on June 8, 2015

While you may have gone to sleep in the dark last night, you likely have power again this morning.  At 11 last night, Ameren, Cornbelt and ComEd reported nearly 2600 Illinois Valley customers without power–most in the Princeton and Tiskilwa areas of Bureau County.  This morning only Ameren is still reporting local outages.  They’ve been able to get the power back on to all but about 70 customers in LaSalle and Putnam Counties.
