Ottawa City Council passes budget with more expenses than revenues

Posted by wlpo on April 21, 2015

Tired of filling sand bags to protect their wastewater treatment plant, the Ottawa City Council is ready to build a wall around it.

The two million dollar wall is part of a $39 million dollar budget passed last night by the council. Another big expense is a south side sewer project costing over two million dollars. Finance Commissioner Wayne Eichelkraut says health insurance claims are up 19 percent in the budget but that’s being offset by rising revenues from the ambulance department and video gambling.

The budget has a deficit of $1.7 million. The hole will be filled with cash reserves and transferring money around between different funds.
