Man accused of looting during storm cleanup in Fairdale

Posted by wlpo on April 20, 2015

After a tragic event, there are usually heroes and sometimes also villains. A Stillman Valley man would fall into the latter category.

Richard Burtch is accused of looting the tornado-ravaged town of Fairdale. DeKalb County deputies say Burtch was seen several times loading his vehicle with donated items for tornado victims. When they visited his house, deputies say they found dozens of tubs filled with medicines, toiletries and food. Burtch also allegedly stole donated rakes, shovels and brooms. Everything was gathered up and returned to people in Fairdale.

Officers think Burtch first came to Fairdale to help a family clean up their damaged house but kept coming back to get supplies for himself. He was arrested for looting and attempted looting. Bond was set at $50,000.
