Barn fire breaks out west of Mendota

Be careful when burning it could quickly become an uncontrolled burn.

Mendota and Troy Grove firefighters got a call around 10 Saturday morning about a barn fire north of Route 34 between Mendota and LaMoille. The fire started after a burn pile spread to the barn.

Firefighters had in contained within a few minutes of arriving.

Record year for sales tax revenues in La Salle County

2014 will go down as a historic year for public safety sales tax revenues in La Salle County.

The quarter percent tax brought in over $2.7 million to the county’s coffers, the most ever since the tax started in 1999. The 2014 tax revenue was $121,000 higher than the year before. May was the only month in 2014 where sales tax revenues were below the prior year.

The La Salle County Public Safety Sales Tax is tacked onto all merchandise you buy except for groceries, medicine, cars, boats and motorcycles.

Illinois Valley principal and county sheriff honored in Congress

Having your name called on the floor of the Congress is a pretty big deal. That’s what happened to a school principal and a county sheriff from the Illinois Valley.

Sara McDonald, principal of Northview School in Peru, was honored by Congressman Adam Kinzinger for being named Elementary School Principal of the Year by the Illinois Principals Assocation. Tom Templeton, La Salle County Sheriff, was honored by Kinzinger for being elected president of the Illinois Sheriff’s Association.

Kinzinger will give McDonald and Templeton a copy of their Congressional resolutions Monday in Ottawa.

Stage in Streator’s City Park is vandalized

As the weather warms, the stage at City Park in Streator will become busy. There was an unwanted guest or two at the stage earlier this week.

Streator Police got a call Thursday about damage being done to the stage at City Park.

The vandalism report is under investigation.

Rollover near Lake Holiday involves one injury

A rollover in Lake Holiday had a man hospitalized.

Chad Kedzierski of Sandwich left a road Friday morning for some reason according to La Salle County deputies. He hit a fence post and then rolled over.

Kedzierski was taken to Valley West Hospital.
