Gas leak taken care of near Northview School

Students at Northview School in Peru got out a little early today after a gas line ruptured around 2:35 this afternoon near the school.

A contractor working at the new addition of the school allegedly hit a gas line at Shooting Park Road and Plum Street which caused the leak. Peru emergency personnel were quick on the scene and the road was blocked off at 21st street. The school was evacuated at 2:55 and the gas was turned off by 3:09.

According to the NewsTribune, Peru Fire Chief Jeff King said no houses in the area were evacuated, but crews were working to help air out some that were downwind of the leak.

Peru and Oglesby Fire departments were on the scene along with Peru Police.

The all-clear was given at 3:45, the roads were open by 3:50 and all officers, fire crews and emergency personnel were off the scene by 4. Ameren workers remained on the scene for repair work.
