State moving ahead with building new bridge over the Illinois River in Spring Valley

It may not happen in the next year or two but plans are moving ahead to replace the Route 89 bridge in Spring Valley.

According to the NewsTribune, the city sold land west of the bridge to the Illinois Department of Transportation for $4,000. This was needed for building a new bridge over the Illinois River.

The new bridge is estimated to cost around $25 million. It would be built slightly to the east of the existing bridge.

The bridge replacement is part of the 5-year highway improvement plan of the state.

Marshall County Board wants Aaron Schock to pay up

Elections aren’t cheap and former Congressman Aaron Schock is being asked to foot the bill.

The Marshall County Board voted Thursday to send Schock a letter asking him to reimburse the county for costs of a primary and special election later this year to find his replacement. The estimated bill is $76,000.

Schock used to represent Marshall County in Congress before he resigned last month due to alleged misuse of taxpayer money.

Route 6 crash in La Salle County kills motorcyclist

A Bolingbrook man is dead after crashing his motorcycle west of Seneca.

Gary Houghton was on Route 6 Saturday evening when he lost control on some gravel and crashed into a ditch. The 52-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The La Salle County Sheriff’s Office and the La Salle County Coroner’s Office are investigating.

Crash outside Oglesby sends two drivers to the hospital

Whenever you pass on a two-lane road, you take a risk. Two people were hurt in a crash blamed on improper passing south of Oglesby.

Ashley Bartman of Mark was ticketed after she tried passing Paul Seidel of Oglesby on Route 71 Saturday afternoon. Bartman hit Seidel while trying to go around him.

Both were taken to Illinois Valley Community Hospital.

Annual chocolate festival benefits neglected and abused children

It takes a heart to help abused and neglected children but it also takes funding. A group that helps children in the La Salle County Court system is bringing back their popular fundraiser.

“Nothing’s Sweeter than a Child Chocolate Festival is this Sunday from 1 until 4 at Celebrations 150 in La Salle. Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA for short, is the group hosting Sunday’s gathering.

At the festival you’ll be able to sample a variety of chocolate candies and baked goods. You’ll also be able to make bids on gift certificates and other items. There will also be activities for children.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children 5 and under.

Gas prices inch down a bit in the Illinois Valley

If you need to fill up for the new work week, Princeton has the cheapest gas in the Illinois Valley.

According to GasBuddy.com, unleaded in Princeton is going for $2.19 a gallon. You can get gas in Ottawa for as low as $2.22 a gallon and $2.23 a gallon in Peru. Mendota is at the high end with $2.35 being the lowest for gas.

The average price of unleaded in Illinois is $2.53 a gallon, down four cents from a week ago.

Music lineup announced for summer festival in Oglesby

If you’re a member of the “Kiss Army”, make sure to be in Oglesby the night of June 4th.

That’s when “Kiss Live: A Tribute to KISS” will perform at Oglesby’s Summer Fun Fest. The opening act will be local favorite “Hairbanger’s Ball”. The festival will also have two separate nights of country acts along with a Buddy Holly tribute band.

Besides music, Oglesby Summer Fun Fest will have a 3-mile run, car show, a carnival, citywide garage sales and appearances by the White Sox and Cubs mascots.

Relief fund set up for tornado victims in Fairdale

The road to recovery will be a long one in Fairdale and you can still help tornado victims get back on their feet.

Alpine Bank in Kirkland has set up an online account to donate to the relief fund for Fairdale. You can find a link to the relief fund on the Classic Hits 103.9 WLPO news page.

Due to overwhelming response to donations of food and supplies, no more of those types of donations are being accepted.

Route 6 crash in La Salle County kills motorcyclist

Very few details have been released so far about a fatal motorcycle crash between Marseilles and Seneca.

The La Salle County Sheriff’s Office is saying they were called to a single-vehicle accident involving a motorcycle Saturday evening.  A 52-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

His name hasn’t been released yet.
