IVCC officially drops tax lawsuit against Putnam County and Marquis Energy

Posted by wlpo on April 10, 2015

Seeing that it was time to cut their losses, the Illinois Valley Community College Trustees have officially ended a tax dispute with Putnam County and Marquis Energy.

Board Chairwoman Melissa Olivero says “at a time when the college needs all of its revenue streams to support instruction and vital services, it’s clear the case could drag on for years and further drain our Education Fund”. Olivero says they take pride in being a principled institution but can’t justify the continued legal expense.

The college sued Putnam County and Marquis Energy in 2011, arguing that because the ethanol plant was already being built when they established an enterprise zone, Marquis’ taxes shouldn’t have been eligible for abatement. Olivero says there was a mistake and the college tried to correct it.
