Mendota latest town to debate allowing chickens within city limits

Posted by wlpo on April 6, 2015

Would you care if a neighbor had chickens? The debate over chickens within city limits is ongoing in Mendota.

According to the NewsTribune, the Mendota City Council agreed to consider Jennifer Skaggs’ request to have six hens in a neighborhood. She promised not to have roosters.

Skaggs argued that Mendota is a farming community so they should be allowed in city limits. However another woman told the council that while she understands why people want chickens, they smell and could lower property values and she doesn’t want them in her neighborhood.

La Salle and Utica have taken up the chicken debate as well in recent years.
