Juveniles messing with fireworks blamed in fire along the I & M Canal

There have been a lot of grass fires this week. One near Utica was allegedly caused by kids playing with fireworks.

Conservation Police Sgt. Hank Frazier says about 10 acres of grass burned after two juveniles riding ATV’s along the towpath lit up fireworks Tuesday afternoon. The Utica Fire Department had to be called to the scene.

Possible charges like operating an ATV illegally were referred to the state’s attorney’s office.

Construction underway in Tonica while I-80 resurfacing coming soon in Ottawa

Peru isn’t the only town with construction work going on along Route 251.

Milling and resurfacing work is going on through Tonica as well on Route 251. It’s a project carried over from last year. The work is supposed to be done by the end of June.

Weather permitting, Interstate 80 between Ottawa and Marseilles will be torn up by the end up of the month. Milling and resurfacing work is expected to start the night of April 19th between Ottawa and Marseilles and last through the 4th of July. Most of the work will be done at night.

In case you’re wondering, no improvements are planned this year on Route 351 through Jonesville.

Medical marijuana discussion planned over breakfast in Peru

Do you have questions or concerns about medical marijuana and its impact to the Illinois Valley? You can have those questions and concerns addressed Wednesday.

The Illinois Valley Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting a business breakfast seminar at Mario’s Maples Supper Club in Peru next Wednesday with the topic being “Medical Marijuana: What to Know”. La Salle County State’s Attorney Brian Towne will talk about the law side of medical marijuana while Matt Levine with Green Thumb Industries will talk about their cultivation center in Oglesby and Reed Wilson will talk about a dispensary in Ottawa.

The talk starts at 7:30 with breakfast served before then. You’re asked to register with IVAC.

Streator man gets probation after a police standoff

A rural Streator man avoids prison after being found guilty of causing a lengthy standoff with police.

Jon Collins was sentenced in Livingston County Court to two years probation for reckless conduct. He was arrested just over a year ago when officers came out to his home after he had allegedly threatened his wife with a gun and fired shots into a ceiling.

The standoff lasted over three hours.

Woman arrested for dealing heroin in Mendota

The fight against heroin in the Illinois Valley continues.

Juana Guzman of Mendota was arrested Monday after she allegedly sold heroin to an undercover informant. Investigators say she also had more heroin with her besides the stuff she was trying to sell.

Guzman was arrested for unlawful delivery of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance. She was taken to the La Salle County Jail with her bond set at $15,000.

Gas prices stay steady heading into Easter travel weekend

Hitting the road for Easter weekend? Ottawa has the cheapest gas in the Illinois Valley.

According to GasBuddy.com, stations in Ottawa are selling unleaded for $2.09 to $2.29 a gallon. In fact the Road Ranger in Ottawa is the cheapest spot in all of Illinois.

Gas in Peru and Princeton is as low as $2.29 a gallon. La Salle, Mendota, Spring Valley, Streator and Oglesby stations are all selling for over $2.30 a gallon.

The statewide average for unleaded right now is $2.60 a gallon, down a dime from a week ago.
