Crash-related fatalities are down so far this year in the Illinois Valley

With one-fourth of the year in the books, roads in the Illinois Valley have been a lot safer this year than last.

La Salle County is well below the pace of a deadly 2014 in which 23 people were killed in 19 crashes. So far in 2015 two people have been killed in two crashes in La Salle County.

After four fatalities last year, no one has been killed in a crash so far this year in Bureau County. Putnam County had no crash fatalities last year and so far there have been none this year.

Statewide, 167 people have been killed in crashes which is 10 more than had been killed at this point last year.

Mendota hospital joins OSF network

If you have a medical emergency in Mendota, you’ll now be treated at OSF St. Paul Medical Center.

The official blessing and dedication ceremony of the new hospital name was held Wednesday morning.  The merger process began early last year to bring Mendota Community Hospital under the growing OSF umbrella.  Just in the past few years OSF has taken over hospitals in Ottawa and Kewanee.

OSF HealthCare now has 11 hospitals.

Union members protest at site of future Dunkin’ Donuts in Peru

The inflatable union rat has popped up in a very visible spot in Peru.

Union members were out Wednesday alongside the rat protesting site work for a future Dunkin’ Donuts on Shooting Park Road next to Burger King. They’re not happy about apparent nonunion workers at the site.

As for the Dunkin’ Donuts, its finally moving ahead after a sign on the property said all of last year that the donut shop was coming soon.

Cocaine dealing arrest made in DePue

An alleged cocaine dealer has been taken off the streets in DePue.

Members of the drug enforcement group Tri-Dent say they had been watching Juan Irala, aka Roberto Morales for quite a while. On Tuesday, they set up a drug sale in DePue where Irala allegedly delivered 3 grams of cocaine to an undercover informant.

Irala was arrested for unlawful delivery of a controlled substance and taken to the Bureau County Jail. His bond was set at $100,000.

Sheriff of La Salle County takes state leadership role

It’s always nice to be recognized by your peers. La Salle County Sheriff Tom Templeton has been picked by his peers to be president of the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association.

Templeton was sworn in as president at this week’s sheriff’s conference in Peoria. The group has been around since 1928.

La Salle County State’s Attorney Brian Towne is also in a state leadership position. He’s the president of the Illinois State’s Attorneys Association.

Peru police officer hurt in crash while on duty

A Peru police officer was hurt after getting rear ended in a two-vehicle crash.

The La Salle County Sheriff’s Office says the officer was stopped on Shooting Park Road Tuesday afternoon when he was hit from behind by Jose Madera of La Salle. The officer was taken to Illinois Valley Community Hospital for minor injuries.

Madera was ticketed for failing to reduce to avoid an accident and illegal transportation of alcohol. He was released with a court date.

Big drug bust on I-80 near La Salle

A man and woman from Vegas are in big trouble in La Salle County.

Just before 10 Tuesday night, a La Salle police officer pulled over Thomas Mason on Interstate 80 just east of La Salle. The drug dog showed up and allegedly led police to find 22 pounds of cocaine and 9 pounds of heroin inside Mason’s vehicle. He and his passenger, Corday Rice also of Las Vegas were arrested for the class X felony of drug trafficking.

Both were taken to the La Salle County Jail.
