Teenage driver ticketed in fatal crash in Peoria

Posted by wlpo on December 25, 2014

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) – Authorities in Peoria issued four traffic citations to a teenage driver involved in a fatal one-car crash last weekend.

The Peoria Journal Star reports police did not identify the 17-year-old driver because of privacy exemptions for juveniles. Peoria police gave the driver tickets for failing to reduce speed, improper lane usage, having too many passengers and reckless driving.

Seventeen-year-old Danielle Smith of Sparland died when the sport utility vehicle rolled in the Saturday crash. She was a junior at Midland High School in Varna.

Six other occupants of the vehicle were taken to Peoria hospitals for treatment. They’ve all been released.

Peoria County prosecutors also are reviewing the case.
