No mercy for huge water bill leaves a late La Salle man’s family angry

Posted by wlpo on December 3, 2014

If you ask his son, Dominic Visione of La Salle was a nice man who paid his city bill on time for 55 years. Seven months after his death, Visione’s son is paying an $878 city bill because a toilet was running for about 11 days.

Dominic “Nick” Visione made it clear to the city council Tuesday night that he felt the city is wrong for having a “no mercy” policy for people who inadvertently run up a huge water and sewer bill. Visione says other towns like Peru, and larger cities like San Francisco, California and Tampa, Florida have forgiveness policies.

The spike in water usage was noticed by a city employee in late November. Visione was contacted and the water was shut off inside of the home. He wonders why the water tracking system didn’t notice the unusual usage sooner.

Many of the aldermen and Mayor Jeff Grove sounded sympathetic but defended their policy. Finance Director John Duncan says the city paid for the treatment and delivery of the water. He says he doesn’t think it would be fair to make other tax payers have to split the cost.

Visione is paying the bill in installations.

Posted by wlpo on December 3, 2014

Crooks are always coming up with new ways to use your stolen credit card information. Three women arrested Sunday outside of the Wal-Mart Super Center in Ottawa are accused of re-encoding gift cards with stolen credit card numbers.

Police say the women then used the fraudulent gift cards to buy more gift cards. Investigators also believe they used the gift cards at the Peru Wal-Mart.

Daquator Lane and Kahdijah Terry of Chicago and Diamond Jones of Maywood each face a felony charge of unlawful use of a credit card. Terry was also accused of obstructing identification.

They were taken to the La Salle County Jail.

Bernabei calls the bust “significant” in trying to curtail heroin in the Illinois Valley.

La Salle property owners to see a tax increase

Posted by wlpo on December 3, 2014

Coming up with the money for police and fire pensions often means raising property taxes. Property owners in La Salle can expect to pay more for the city’s share of property taxes next year.

The proposed tax levy is a 10.6 percent increase from last year’s. The total levy is approximately $2.5 million. Of that, about $888,000 is for pensions. $350,000 is being levied for the general fund.

Finance Director John Duncan, IV says the owner of a home valued at $100,000 could expect to see an increase of $161.

A Truth in Taxation hearing was held Tuesday night. The levy will be approved by the city council Tuesday, December 16.
