IVCC students celebrated at annual dinner

Good grades and hours of volunteer work are paying off for a select group of students at Illinois Valley Community College. Students were acknowledged Thursday during the annual 21 st Century Scholars Society dinner at Deer Park Country Club.

Earning the top honor was Tiernan Ebener of Peru. He will receive $3,500 for tuition, fees, books and expenses.

Wine, food and jazz are on the menu in La Salle

 Sunshine and cool temperatures make for great wine drinking weather. You’ll be able to sample wines and microbrews at Jazz’n the Street.  The music festival opens at 4pm Saturday on First Street in La Salle with live music and dancing. You’ll also find food and snacks on sale. Fireworks are at 9pm. Admission is free. You may want to bring a lawn chair.

Entertainment on First Street began Friday with Barbeque and Blues. Approximately 17 teams competed in a barbeque rib cook-off.

Sixth company to request permission for medical marijuana in Peru

Will Peru be the home of the one medical marijuana cultivation center allowed in District 17? A sixth company interested in applying for a state permit will present their plans Monday.

Representatives of MEDICANN, LLC plan to be at the Peru committee of the whole meeting at 7pm. They’re asking for a special use for a property on 103rd Road.  A regular council meeting will follow at 7:30pm
