Culvert replace to close Meriden Road

If Meriden Road, or La Salle County Highway 10 is part of your daily drive it will be closed starting Tuesday. Workers with the county highway department are replacing a culvert one miles south of the county line. The work should be completed Friday.

Streator Police warn of a new phone scam

The Publishers Clearing House is real, but an offer from someone wanting you to transfer them money is not. The Streator Police Department is warning of a new phone scam involving a caller claiming to be from the Publishers Clearing House.

They’ll ask you to buy “money dots” and to transfer money to them so you can get your winnings. It’s a scam. Never give out your bank account number or personnel information to receive money.

Mysterious loud noise heard across Peru overnight

Did a loud boom wake you up overnight? At least three people in Peru heard a loud boom or explosion around 3:30am Saturday. Police officers went out trying to pinpoint what it was but didn’t find anything.

There were no reports of fires or power outages. Officers say in the past, similar noises were caused by empty barges hitting or semis backing up to their trailers.

A woman on Seventh Street thought it sounded like a half stick of dynamite.

Former Ottawa police chief and commission to be remember with a field

Ottawa isn’t forgetting a man that was once its police chief and city commission. A field at Library Park is being named after the late Ed Whitney.

Whitney died last December and had been a commissioner since 1995.

A dedication is being held at 5pm Tuesday.
