La Salle man arrested for gun related charges

Illinois’s rules for owning and carrying a gun have changed a lot in the past year but one thing has remained the law- you need to have a FOID card.

Police say Stephen Borostowski of La Salle did not have a FOID card when he was allegedly found with a gun and ammunition during a traffic stop Thursday outside of La Salle.

Borostowski was arrested for aggravated unlawful use of weapon, a felony, and possession of a firearm and ammunition without a FOID card. He was also given tickets for driving with a revoked license, driving on the shoulder and possession of cannabis and was taken to the La Salle County Jail.

Auction raises $36,000 for the Special Olympics

Normally when the Starved Rock Area Special Olympics hosts an event you’re at a football field. The setting was fancier for their annual auction. Supporters filled Celebrations 150 in La Salle Thursday night to raise $36,300 for the agency that includes athletes from La Salle, Bureau, and Putnam Counties.

Area 16 offers competition for athletes in 17 sports.

Miller Group Charitable Trust sponsored the fundraiser.  Miller Group Media includes Classic Hits 103.9 WLPO, 99.3 WAJK, 96.5 The Wolf, The NewsTribune, Agrinews and 815Life.com.

Mendota scouts raise money for vest to protect drug dog

The Boy Scouts do a lot of great things. There will be a prime example of it happening at the Mendota Sweet Corn Festival.

Mendota Police Sergeant Kenneth Haun says the Boy Scouts will present a bullet proof vest to Mendota’s K9 Agar Saturday afternoon.

The vest was bought with money raised by the scouts.

Congressman backs president’s decision on air strikes in Iraq

Air strikes have started in Iraq and your congressman supports the move.

Republican Adam Kinzinger for months has been wanting to send in air strikes to stop the Islamic militants. He says he’s cautiously optimistic that President Obama is “finally beginning to take the march of violent extremism in Iraq seriously”.

Kinzinger is an Air Force pilot who has seen action in Iraq.

Little bit of everything at Wenona Days

The week long party known as Wenona Days continues today.

On the schedule Friday is a carnival, beer tent and food stands. A rare 5K run at night will take off from Wenona City Park at 7. Live music will close things down.

Saturday at Wenona Days there’s a Krispy Kreme Donut sale, an “Amazing Race” type competition and fireworks while the festival parade is Sunday at 1.
