Running race and walk to benefit a local Alzheimer’s support group

Something that seems like a personality quirk could be a sign of Alzheimer’s Disease.   Peg Gonet and Joanne Milby are active with the Illinois Valley Alzheimer’s Group. Every year they hold the Boo Milby 5K Memorial Run-Walk to raise money for the support group.

The run-walk is Saturday, August 16 in La Salle. In addition to the race there are a three-mile walk and one-mile walk. Teams and groups are encouraged to participate in the shorter walk. Registration is $20 in advance or $25 the day of the race.

Spring Valley Police to host the National Night Out

National Night Out is about community safety and awareness but for the children that go to it, it’s about free food and games.

National Night Out is recognized in towns across the country. In Spring Valley, the police department sponsors the annual evening of swimming, hot dogs and safety demonstrations at Kirby Park.

Activities begin at 5pm Tuesday at the Spring Valley Pool where kids can swim for free until 6pm. You will also be able to check out the Lifeflight helicopter. There will also be a bounce-house, displays by local police departments, games and child safety seat checks.

Ottawa Riverfest closing today

Art work and cars will both be on display as Ottawa Riverfest prepares to close later today. Crafts and farmers market will operate all day till 5. A parade steps off at 1 and the Wilson Family Carnival also opens at 1.

“Taste of Ottawa” is 3 – 10pm today. “Euforquestra” entertains at 7:30pm preceded by Katie Belle at 4 and Daphne Willis at 5:30.

Search underway in Sheridan

A police investigation that started with the deaths of 2 women in Dwight has reached to the village of Sheridan. 4 police agencies and firemen from 2 MABAS districts are searching 26 acres of ground in the village of Sheridan today for clues into the deaths of Kelli Denker and her mother, Donna. That according to a State Police news release.

The 2 women were found shot to death in a Dwight residence June 14th. A man with the Denkers was also shot, but survived and gave a description of the shooter to a Dwight paramedic.

Then, on June 27th, a former acquaintance of Kelli Denker, Joseph Sipple killed himself in front of sheriff’s deputies at a residence outside Sheridan. Police were going to arrest Sipple on a warrant for possession of stolen property.

The location is not being disclosed and will be cordoned off.
