Annual ice cream social and concert is Tuesday in Oglesby

Enjoy some show tunes and ice cream at the Dickinson House in Oglesby. The Dickinson House Foundation Ice Cream Social is Tuesday. Ice cream will be served at 6pm with the Oglesby Municipal Band playing at 7pm.

The concert’s theme is Broadway. Brandon Czubachowski and Jim Jones are the featured soloists.

Bring your lawn chair.

Man arrested for allegedly stabbing a woman in Streator

A so-called domestic dispute in Streator left a woman suffering from a stab wound. The police were called to East Main Street early Saturday morning for a 34-year-old woman that had been stabbed.

The woman, whose name and condition weren’t being made available, was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital and eventually to another hospital.

Meanwhile, officers were arresting 29-year-old William Milian. Police say Milian had left the area but was soon found on East Morrell Street and was arrested for aggravated domestic battery.

Milian was taken to the La Salle County Jail. The stabbing is being investigated by the Streator Police Department and the La Salle County State’s Attorney.

This story was corrected to change the charge to aggravated domestic battery.

World Vital Records available through the Peru Public Library

You know about your parents and your grandparents but what do you know about their parents? You might be able to dig deeper into your family’s history using a program available through the Peru Public Library. Access to World Vital Records is open to you if you have Peru library card.

Library Director Charm Ruhnke says you’ll be able to access the database anytime from anywhere you have internet.

World Vital Records includes family history and genealogy records. You’ll also be able to search U.S. Federal Census images and indexes from 1790 to 1940, military records, and the enhanced Social Security Death Index records.

Relay for Life nearing

Bureau County’s annual Relay for Life,  sponsored by the American Cancer Society moves on to the Hall High School grounds this Friday night and Saturday. Opening ceremonies, survivors lap and celebration,  caregivers lap, luminaria and fight back ceremonies are all on the program.  You can google relay for life slash Bureau County for more information

Workers still push for higher minimum wage

Fast food workers from across the country have voted in suburban Chicago to escalate their campaign for higher wages and union representation by including civil disobedience.

More than 1300 workers gathered yesterday in Villa Park.  Some workers say they’re prepared to engage in sit-down strikes and organize more workers in their campaign to win $15-an hour wages and a union.

Industry officials say a $15  wage would hurt job creation and that the solution is more education and job training.

Central States Tourney about to begin

Summer is moving along as indicated by the Central States Senior League Regional baseball tournament starting Friday.  According to coordinator Don Finley, teams will arrive around mid-afternoon Friday with an opening ceremony at 6pm in Peru Washington Park.

Competition starts Saturday with three games in Oglesby and two in Peru.  Sunday The championship will be hosted by Oglesby on Wednesday, August 6.

Ophir Grade School to hold a reunion

46 years covers a lot of grade school graduates of the old Ophir Grade School in Triumph.  If you were a graduate of Ophir, you’re invited to a reunion at 5:30pm, August 23 at the Mendota Moose Lodge.

Former staff are invited as well. A church service in Triumph Church the next day is also planned.  Invitations have been sent out, but,  if you were missed, call 895-8706.
