    Including the wildfires that ripped through parts of San Diego County this week, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has responded to more than 1,500 fires this year, compared with about 800 during an average year. That’s allowed a sense of dread to build among officials and firefighters who feel it’s going to be a long year.

  More than 10- thousand evacuees have returned home in the San Diego region.
