La Salle County Board tells the state “hands off” their wind farms

Posted by wlpo on April 10, 2014

The debate of local versus state control is heating back up in La Salle County.

The La Salle County Board is sending a resolution to local lawmakers opposing a proposed bill that gives the state control of wind farm zoning. Not only would counties lose zoning control but they’d lose revenue that comes with charging fees per wind tower.

La Salle County charges over six thousand dollars in fees for every wind tower. Chairman Jerry Hicks says they have over 300 towers up and running and another 100 waiting to go up if and when the wind energy market improves.

The farm bureau is pushing for state control of wind towers since a lot of southern Illinois counties don’t have zoning laws to regulate where wind farms go.

Friday is supposed to be the deadline for the proposed law to get out of committee.
